IC Information
Name: Lord Zuko
Age: 87
Canon: The Legend of Korra
Canon Point: After Book 3: Change.
Physical Description: Full body, face.
Possessions: Aside from clothes and money, anything carried in the pack he keeps on his dragon (presumably basic travel supplies).
Companion: Druk, a red dragon. He also serves as a mount.
Personality: Lord Zuko is seen across the world as a kind of living legend, and a beacon of peace and harmony. He was the son of the tyrannical Fire Lord Ozai, who rose up against his father and family legacy, and overcame the odds to end the war along with his enemy-turned-friend, Avatar Aang. Zuko's story is one of redemption -- of both himself and the Fire Nation -- of the triumph of love over hatred, and most importantly, of living a life of dignity and honour.
He wasn't always that way, however, and to understand the man Zuko is today requires an understanding of his complex past. His childhood and teenage years were ones of turmoil: raised within the back-biting machinations of the Fire Nation court, as a child Zuko was singled out as a target for Ozai's fury because of the troubled relationship with his wife, even going so far as to say Zuko was "lucky to be born" because of his inferior ability as a firebender compared with his younger sister, Azula. Ozai's cruelty came to a head when Zuko was thirteen years old, when he spoke out of turn in a war council against the unnecessary sacrifice of Fire Nation troops. Although Zuko's outburst was born from a deep compassion for his people, his father interpreted it as the utmost disrespect, and this resulted in the Agni Kai that ended in Zuko's face being burned, and his exile from the Fire Nation.
Thus began three years of torment, in which he was tasked by his father to capture the Avatar in order to regain his lost honour and return to the Fire Nation. Zuko was an angry, troubled young man, hot-tempered, belligerent, prone to bully and belittle those around him, selfish, reckless... Yet his life disguised as a peasant fugitive in the Earth Kingdom opened his eyes to the fact that others, like him, were suffering at the hands of the Fire Nation, and that he had the choice to walk a different path than the one his father had forced upon him. In his struggle to distinguish right from wrong, and after many poor choices, he eventually realised all along that he had pursued the Avatar not for the sake of personal honour, but because he thought it would lead to his father's love. This came with the realisation that Ozai, a cruel and power hungry tyrant who used his children like tools, wasn't truly capable of loving anyone.
Thus Zuko gained a kind of enlightenment and inner peace, in which he accepted his own true nature and rejected his father's worldview, and joined the Avatar to bring him down. With this transformation, Zuko became far more kinder, compassionate, peace loving and self-aware: he's made mistakes, and for the rest of his life since joining forces with Avatar Aang, he's devoted all his efforts to atoning for his misdeeds, and the horrors his forefathers had inflicted upon the world in the century-long war. Literally bearing his own scars as a legacy of Fire Nation cruelty, Zuko became the best suited person, as the new Fire Lord, to heal the scars inflicted on the rest of the world.
Zuko is a lot calmer and mellower in his old age than his teenage self, now that all his old inner conflicts have been resolved. He is quiet, serene, and unassuming, never shown to lose his temper, becoming only sternly displeased at worst. He is kind and humble, being shown as pleased to meet the friends of the Avatar, and even in his retirement, continues his lifelong dedication to world harmony by serving as an ambassador for peace. To add to his humility, he's seemingly cast off the trappings of royalty, choosing to live a quiet life of retirement on Ember Island, and travelling the world where necessary with only the company of his dragon, Druk.
The Avatar is someone he has deep bonds to, through his great grandfather, Avatar Roku, and his best friend and Firebending student, Avatar Aang. Avatar Korra, too, is someone he is willing to guide and support; when she comes to him for advice, he states that he would love to be her council in times of need, as he was for Aang. He shows his willingness to protect her by chasing down the Red Lotus to the North Pole, and, even in his old age, helping Tonraq, Desna and Eska to fight the escaped criminals, even at risk to himself.
Despite -- or perhaps because of -- his turbulent childhood and teenage years, Zuko treasures his family. He's shown to still harbour affection for his uncle, Iroh, showing genuine interest and shock when Korra mentions she encountered him in the Spirit World. His grandson is also named after Iroh, who he's likewise very close to. When making a decision on whether to help Korra, the younger Iroh decides he trusts the Avatar's judgement, because it's what his grandfather would do, showing he clearly looks up to Zuko as a role model. Zuko is also very caring towards his daughter, the present reigning Fire Lord: when he realises the Red Lotus pose a threat to her, he immediately returns to the Fire Nation to guard her.
...Oh, and let's not forget he still has a terrible sense of humour. He dryly remarks, upon explaining P'Li's identity and powers: "Ironically, I hired a guy with a similar ability to kill the Avatar myself once. Didn't work." He apparently maintains his self-deprecating outlook, and now, later in his life, seems to have learned to forgive himself, not taking his past misdeeds too seriously.
